Violent Soho’s Like Soda Video Clip

Violent Soho’s Like Soda Video Clip

Violent Soho asked me to photograph the behind-the-scenes of their first single from their new album, which was called WACO. It was my first time photographing Soho, Brisbane’s biggest band. It was before I know all of them well. I might have photographed the Like Soda tour before this – I can’t remember the specific sequence of events. But it was a super fun couple of days.

Scroll down for photos of Violent Soho on the Like Soda set, Like Soda lyrics, and other photos of Soho.

“The boys ripped up the lush greens of Bardon Bowls Club in this video released overnight, directed by Dan Graetz. Like Soda is the first single from the band’s anticipated forthcoming album due for release early in 2016. The band will play on the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival circuit in February 2016.

Like Soda’s promo image

You probably saw the promo image for the Like Soda clip already, but there it is above. We almost didn’t take this photo only because it wasn’t planned. We took another photo that was intended for the promo shot, but we took this photo on a whim when the sun was about to go down. There was only another 30 minutes of light, so we snapped this in a spare minute before the dudes needed to get back to shooting the clip.

Violent Soho, Brisbane’s best band at Brisbane’s best bowls club

The Like Soda clip was filmed at Bardon Bowls Club. There are a few reasons why I loved Bardon Bowls Club, even though I had never been there before.

First, the staff were really friendly.

Second, I won $400 on the pokies there after only putting in $10. Boerdam didn’t believe me because I didn’t have the cash to prove it. Because we had to be on set at 6am for Soho to have their makeup applied, the guy who could open the cash register wasn’t at the bowls club yet. So I had to trust the staff when they said just let the jackpot keep spinning until the guy with the key got to the club. He didn’t get to the club until around 2pm, meaning there was $400 worth of money just sitting there with an “I’m coming back” sign on the machine being the only protection between my winnings and someone who wants to have some free fun on the pokies.

Lastly, no one at the club took my money.

End of story, really. It wasn’t that interesting. Here are more photos.

Guitarist Luke Boerdam described the sound on Like Soda as “those empty summer afternoons in a RSL and pubs – when all the pokies are empty, beer is warm and there’s nothing but horse-race noise in the background…there’s no resolution in the song – its just describing a daze we’re all in.” – Hysteria Magazine

Like Soda lyrics

[Verse 1]
The heat, it drowned itself and all the roads
With rattles from all the pubs and pokies rooms (The sound never goes)
They’d given up the workers life
For a moment it was clear and so precise
And I’ll say

[Bridge]
I don’t mind, I don’t care
I’ll just say whatever
I don’t mind, we don’t care
We’ll be here forever
And we don’t mind and we don’t care
We’ll be here forever

[Verse 2]
‘Cause I burnt my life and I branded my soul
Went to church and sung to a god
And it breaks my heart
This is the place where it starts
‘Cause it’s this suburban life and its grey paint world
Four-wheel drives and its peaceful mould
And I’ll say it again
What ever happened to you my friend?
And I’ll say

[Bridge]
I don’t mind, I don’t care
I’ll just say whatever
We don’t mind, we don’t care
And we’ll be here forever

[Chorus]
It’s the truth that keeps you warm
That lets you fall down
Like soda it will pop
Yeah, let it fall down

[Verse 3]
‘Cause I’d rather play pokies and a dead friend’s game
Stay in a pub and drink warm beer
And I’ll say thank you
For all the greetings and gratitude
‘Cause we don’t complain enough but we never shut up
Talk to computers and made of drugs
And I’ll say it again
What ever happened to you my friends?
And I’ll say

[Bridge]
I don’t mind, I don’t care
I’ll just say whatever
We don’t mind, we don’t care
And we’ll be here forever

[Chorus]
It’s the truth that keeps you warm
That lets you fall down
Like soda, it will pop
Yeah, let it fall down
Let it fall down
Let it go

[Instrumental]

[Chorus]
It’s the truth that keeps you warm
That lets you fall down
Like soda, it will pop
Yeah, let it fall down
It’s the truth that keeps you warm
That lets you fall down
Like soda, it will pop
Yeah, let it fall down
Let it fall down
Let it fall down
Let it go

ABOUT THE PROJECT

I’ve been covering Violent Soho work on their upcoming album, titled Waco. The photos in this project were taken while they recorded their album at The Shed in Brisbane, filmed their film clip for ‘Like Soda’ at The Bardon Bowls Club, toured ‘Like Soda’ in Australia, signed WACO albums on its release, played around the country on Laneway Festival, and toured the album around Australia with Dune Rats and DZ Deathrays.
